Redact PDF — truly in your browser

Vikone redacts your PDF truly in your browser. The text underneath is deleted and the file flattened — not just covered with a black box. Built for sensitive documents: your file stays on your device, no upload to remote servers. Free, no account.

Why a black box isn't redaction

A PDF stores text as data, separate from how it looks. Drawing a filled rectangle over a word adds a shape on top — the word stays in the file and can be selected, copied, or revealed by deleting the box. True redaction deletes the underlying text and flattens the page, so nothing is left to recover.

How to redact a PDF the right way

  1. 1

Open your PDF in the redact tool

Load the file directly in your browser — it is processed locally, not sent to a remote server.

  2. 2

Mark the text or areas to remove

Drag over every piece of sensitive information — names, numbers, signatures.

  3. 3

Apply — deleting the underlying content

The tool removes the actual text, not just a visual cover. This is the step a black box skips.

  4. 4

    Flatten and save

Flattening locks the page so no separate layer can be peeled back. Save the clean copy.

Frequently asked

Does this upload my PDF?

No. Vikone redacts entirely in your browser, so a confidential document is not sent to a remote server. After the page loads, it even works offline.

Is it safe to use on confidential documents?

Yes. Because the file is processed locally and stays on your device, there is no server copy to leak or breach. The underlying text is deleted, not just hidden.

Can redacted text be recovered?

If the underlying text was deleted and the file flattened, there is nothing left to recover. A black box that only covers text can be removed; true redaction deletes it.

Is it really free?

Yes — no account, no usage caps, no watermark. There is no server cost because everything runs locally in your browser: no account, no upload, no waiting.
